LeeAnne's birthday was on July 8th. But it took until the end of August before we could have a little sisters birthday celebration for her. A birthday soiree!
We had an outdoor dinner at 6:30pm, held at my parents. Vanessa helped set up. Mama helped make the food. We strung up some doilie bunting. In hindsight, we should have bought way more doilies. But we made do with what we had. Our table was an old chippy painted door which we set on two wooden sawhorses that belonged to Grandpa Roth.
A few mason jar lanterns were hung in the tree nearby....
A couple of old trunks, and random chairs were placed around the table. And a yoga ball. Max claimed that one to sit on! :) I dug out my old cream and gold china that belonged to Grandma Gerber and we used that for the dinnerware.
The canopy provided shelter from the direct sun and helped to buffer the wind. It was a rather windy evening.
And we used mom's blue flowered glassware. I still remember her buying those glasses at Hafeman's Grocery Store in Wellesley when I was a little girl. They were a big deal because they matched her blue china so well. :)
The only instructions I gave out was that everyone should wear a lovely summer dress. And since we had a couple boys join us - (dad had to eat and Max too!) - they were instructed to wear collared shirts. :)
The menu: grilled pizza on the bbq, spinach & strawberry salad, quinoa salad, fresh salsa and chips.
For dessert: Rhubarb-Raspberry Pie, Peach Crumble Pie and homemade vanilla icecream.
It was all quite delicious if I do say so myself!
(Dad must have gotten one of the "burnt offerings"...there were a couple pizzas like that. Still trying to perfect the art of grilled pizza!)
"I will have my pie and eat it too. Forget about weight watchers tonight!"
Max snapped a few pics of us afterwards. We were losing the light fast. And he was providing quite the antics while taking the photos. It is a wonder we had any keepers at all!
And then, very impromptu like, we had a soccer game. Max reeeeeeally want to play a game after our meal. A party game of soccer. Using the yoga ball. So we did. Can you imagine? Some ladies wore heels and some went barefoot. It was a sight to behold!
And by the time the game ended it was almost pitch dark outside. A most fun evening. We're going to have to do it again! We haven't done anything like that for years....so I was kind of rusty with putting it together. We learned from our mistakes. Next time it will be easier, quicker and better. I can hardly wait! :)
And the quote of the night was from the birthday girl herself, Ms. LeeAnne. We were all nicely sitting down to eat and she looks over at me and says "My, you look so pretty!" and then a second or two pause and "May I have my gift?!" It had to be the way she said it. Unplanned. So spontaneous. And it was just the moment. We were laughing uncontrollably all night about it. And sometimes still to this day we say it to each other. Silliness!
